Railway track cycling on the coal railway

The tour starts and ends at Hattingen Central Station. After a few kilometers on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path , you'll reach the heart of the tour: the Glück-Auf-Trasse , also known as the Coal Railway. Built over 100 years ago for transporting coal, it now serves as a cycle and hiking path. The first 17 kilometers of the tour head south to Sprockhövel. Since there's a slight uphill climb, this circular route is one of the more challenging routes in the Ruhr region. Reaching the southernmost point of the tour, you'll head north again. The next destination is Wengern on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path.

Ruhr Valley cycle path and sightseeing tips

Upon arriving in Wengern, you'll join the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, which boasts stunning scenery. The Nachtigall Colliery and the crossing on the Hardenstein ferry are highlights of this section of the tour. Be sure to allow some time to visit the Nachtigall Colliery. The LWL Industrial Museum presents the early stages of industrialization in the Ruhr Valley and brings you closer to the region's fascinating history. At the end of the tour, another highlight awaits you: the LWL Industrial Museum Henrichshütte Hattingen . Visit the impressive site where the oldest blast furnace in the Ruhr area stands.
