The mining route RevierRoute - experience mining

For many, mining still symbolizes the Ruhr area. However, this era finally came to an end in 2018, when Prosper Haniel, the last hard coal mine in the region, was closed. You can follow the growing myth of mining on a bike for around 40 kilometers.

Mining history by bike

The “pit trip” begins and ends with the absolute highlight of the tour: the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in food. The monument path, for which interesting guided tours are offered, illustrates the path of coal. The Ruhr Museum, which is also located on the industrial site, should not be left out on your little journey of discovery. The well-developed railway line North Star Walk then leads you to Gelsenkirchen. The Schurenbachhalde in Essen as well as the North Star Park in Gelsenkirchen are recommended detours off the tour.

The tour continues to Tetrahedron Bottrop. The ascent is strenuous, but when you get to the top you will be rewarded with a unique view of the western Ruhr area. The site of the Prosper Haniel colliery can also be seen well from the heap. In Oberhausen, the RevierRoute then runs south again and takes you over the Rhenish railway back to food.
