The industrial culture route by bike - 300 kilometers of Ruhr area history

The Industrial Culture Route by Bike is a new circular route covering around 300 kilometers that leads through the history of one of the most exciting and unusual cycling travel regions in Europe. The industrial culture route stands out noticeably from other cycle routes and stages impressive industrial cathedrals into sensational palaces of culture. It tells the story of the former working-class region that has long since shaken off its antiquated image and blossomed into an attractive leisure landscape.

Cycling away from traffic

On green paths along former railway tracks and beautiful waterways Cyclists experience the old traffic arteries freshly and reinterpreted as well-developed cycle paths, often away from traffic and right in the middle of the nature in the Ruhr area, which is still so unexpectedly intense for many visitors. The route runs exclusively on the fully signposted route node system, so that orientation is always easy.

Experience industrial culture

The anchor points of the route are industrial monuments right on the side of the road, as are extraordinary heap landscapes and loving workers' settlements. This is one of the visitor highlights UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen, the Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord, the huge one Gasometer Oberhausen and the historical Ship lift Henrichenburg in Waltrop. Unforgettable holiday moments are created in the visitor gallery Nightingale colliery or with a personal chat at one of the typical little booths "around the corner".
