Shore paths in the Ruhr area - bike path on the Wesel-Datteln Canal

The Wesel-Datteln Canal is a federal waterway that runs from the Rhine near Wesel to the canal junction in Datteln. It is one of the busiest waterways in Germany. The Wesel-Datteln Canal can also be explored by bike over a distance of around 63 kilometers.

Cycle along the Canal and the Lippe 

The canal cycle path starts in the ports south of Wesel and the renatured Lippe estuary delta. The tour takes you east along the canal. After Hünxe and Gahlen, Dorsten is the next larger town. North of the Marl Chemical Park you cycle along the Lippe before the route meets the Wesel-Datteln Canal again just before Haltern am See. 

Versatile opportunities for canal bank cycling 

The small village of Flaesheim lies facing south in front of the huge Forest area of ​​the Haard, which belongs to the Hohemark Nature Park. On the northern side of the canal, the route takes you to Datteln. The canal cycle path meets the southern bank at the lock directly on the Dattelner Meer.
