Shore paths in the Ruhr area - cycle path on the Dortmund-Ems Canal

The Dortmund-Ems Canal is a federal waterway that runs from Dortmund to the Ems and then as a canal stretch parallel to the Ems to just before Papenburg. With the Dortmund-Ems Canal cycle route, there is even a signposted long-distance cycle path along the canal. 22 kilometers of it run along the canal within the Ruhr area.

Cycle past large poplars

From the Dortmund port, the cycle path leads you along the left bank of the Dortmund-Ems Canal to the Ship lift Henrichenburg in Waltrop. The surface is not always well developed on this section, but the route is still very scenic. The canal often shows itself as an avenue with large poplars on the canal bank. The boat lift in Henrichenburg is the highlight along the way. You should cycle through the large lock chamber.

From Henrichenburg to Datteln

In Henrichenburg, the Dortmund-Ems Canal meets the Rhine-Herne Canal. In a northerly direction, the cycle path leads you partly through the city of Datteln. A less well-developed path goes along the canal to the Dattelner Meer, where the Wesel-Datteln Canal branches off to the west. In the north you can see the Dortmund-Ems Canal leading further out of the Ruhr area. Also worth seeing is the old trip, a disused old course of the canal. The Dortmund-Ems Canal can be toured by bike “Grand Canal” experience that you can find on our blog.
