Start and end at Essen Central Station

As a circuit (or an eight), the tour can be started at any point. For a comfortable journey by train, we recommend Essen Central Station as the starting and ending point. At the resident there Bike station you can also rent a bike. On the node network The tour then takes you first through Essen's city center. From there you have to survive the unattractive part of the tour and cycle a few hundred meters along the busy Gladbecker Straße. However, there is a bike path on the sidewalk. The actual bike path begins after the Grillostraße intersection. In the center of Essen you first cycle past an allotment garden into a small forest area. The cycle path follows the Berne, a tributary to the Emscher, north to Altenessen. At the Cologne-Minden railway line, the route turns east and you will quickly reach the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein.

The visitor highlight in Essen - the Zeche Zollverein

The cycle paths on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein lead you across the entire site. Of course, there is a guided tour, for example along the monument path or through the Ruhr Museum. On this long bike tour, you will probably only enjoy the beautiful colliery area while cycling through it. On the Customs union route you leave the site to the east via a well-developed former railway line. The path passes another colliery tower in which the Phenomania field of experience is based. A few minutes by bike later it goes to the Bonifacius colliery over in the direction of Bochum. The cult meetingore train booth' is a good place to stop for the first time. Then you follow the ore railway route north to Rhine-Herne Canal. From here begins the eastern loop, which means a sporting challenge.

Mountain stage on the Hoheward heap

First it goes through a forest area to the Zeche Ewald in Herten. There follows the athletically demanding ascent to the Hoheward dump, which is rewarded with a tremendous panoramic view. Alternatively, the heap can also be easily bypassed. The tour leaves the Hoheward heap over the dragon bridge and it becomes more comfortable again. Along the Emscher it goes back to the Rhine-Herne Canal, then further west to Gelsenkirchen. Another mountain passage takes you up to the Schurenbachhalde. The path then follows the canal through Bottrop to Oberhausen.

Slinky Springs to Fame, RS 1 and home stretch

The striking and often photographed bridge Slinky Springs to Fame Oberhausen is the western turning point of the tour (unfortunately, the bike can only be pushed over the bridge). The Gasometer Oberhausen is then another highlight of the round, a visit is a must. At the Center Oberhausen the path first follows the canal, am House Ripshorst the tour then turns back towards Essen. Through the green Hexbachtal, the path first leads to the Mülheim city area, until you finally reach the RS 1 reached. In the direction of Mülheim, the expansion stage is already complete. However, the tour runs in the direction of Essen. Here it first goes over a water-bound surface, but the former railway line is still perfectly passable. In Essen, it's worth taking a detour across the ThyssenKrupp site with the new corporate headquarters and the historic founder's house, before taking the familiar route through Essen's city center back to Essen's main train station.

Note on the discovery tours in the radrevier.ruhr

This tour is one of the discovery tours im radrevier.ruhr. This means that it also leads along cycle paths that are not part of the region's figureheads. However, accepting compromises in the quality of the cycle path also means being able to “experience” “undiscovered” tours off the popular and often heavily frequented cycle paths.
