Long-distance cycle paths in the Ruhr area

The cycle path network of the radrevier.ruhr is mainly based on the three large regional long-distance cycle paths Route Industriekultur per Rad, RuhrtalRadweg and Römer-Lippe-Route. The approximately 300-kilometer circuit of the Industrial culture route by bike runs through the central Ruhr area and is therefore the heart of the radrevier.ruhr. The popular one runs along the southern border of the Ruhr area Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, while in the northern radrevier.ruhr the Roman Lippe Route offers exciting wheel moments.

Emscher Weg, Rheinradweg and RS 1

In addition to these three themed long-distance cycle paths in the Ruhr area, the Emscher way and the Rhine cycle path play an important role in the regional cycle path network. Looking to the future, the Cycle expressway Ruhr, or RS 1 for short, also play an important role in the regional cycle path network. At the moment, however, cyclists can only find isolated parts of the region that provide a first, but certainly still manageable, insight into the future of bicycle mobility.

The long-distance cycle routes in the Ruhr area

Industrial culture route by bike

27 anchor points of industrial culture, many other exciting industrial monuments, 17 panoramas of the industrial landscape and 13 important workers' settlements tell the unique history of the Ruhr area. This history is best explored from the saddle of a bicycle on the Route of Industrial Culture by Bike.

Ruhr Valley Cycle Path

The cycling highlight in North Rhine-Westphalia! The RuhrtalRadweg meanders 240 kilometers from Winterberg in Sauerland into the Ruhr area to the Rhine near Duisburg. No other cycle path in Germany combines such a wide range of relaxing nature, old industrial monuments and modern high culture in such a small space.

Roman Lippe Route

Opened in 2013, the Römer-Lippe-Route between Detmold and Xanten is still one of the newcomers among long-distance tourist cycle paths. With the Roman past of the region and the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia, the 295-kilometer-long main route of the Römer-Lippe-Route stands for historical Roman culture and sparkling water experiences.

Emscher way

The Emscher Weg from Holzwickede to Dinslaken is probably one of the most unusual river bike paths in Germany. Here the structural change can be experienced up close, because cyclists not only accompany the Emscher on its way across the Ruhr area, but also on its important path of renaturation, away from the formerly stinking sewer towards the small natural paradise of the future.
