The RevierRoute steel kitchen - experience the change

The Ruhr area has changed significantly in recent years and decades. Where miners and steel workers used to shake hands, there are now cafés, restaurants, leisure and adventure centers. The “Steel Kitchen” RevierRoute, which is around 30 kilometers long, is all about these large-scale changes.

Discover structural change by bike

The bike tour starts and ends on Gasometer Oberhausen. The change in the region quickly becomes clear here: Where the Gute Hoffnungshütte used to stand is now the Center Oberhausen, Europe's largest shopping and leisure centre. From there you cycle over the green path Landscape Park Duisburg-Nord. Today, concerts, festivals and street food markets take place in the disused former smelting works. You can climb, dive or simply enjoy the impressive industrial scenery on a walk!

Industrial work - yesterday and today

The route on the node system then leads you further to the Rhine. There you will drive past the ThyssenKrupp factory, which is still in operation, because despite the change, industrial work is still going on in the Ruhr area today. When the sky turns red at night, you know that another blast furnace has been fired. From the Alsum mountain you can get the best view of the still active coking plant. Ultimately, it's about the HOAG route past the Sterkrade colliery back to Oberhausen.
