The RevierRoute trade routes - experience horizons
As early as the Middle Ages, trade routes connected Germany's major cities and thus facilitated the transport of goods throughout the country. In Westphalia, the "Hellweg" was one of the most important trade routes. It runs from the Rhine near Duisburg to the Weser crossing at Corvey in Höxter. The starting point of the 45-kilometer circuit is in Unna, right on this historic trade route.
Traveling on medieval trade routes
The RevierRoute "Trade Routes" takes you east to the outermost edge of the radrevier.ruhr. There you turn south and drive up the Haarstrang, a chain of hills that stretches from west to east in the southern part of the city of Dortmund and across the districts of Unna and Soest. From the ridge you can enjoy a wide view of the surrounding area. After the descent into the Ruhr Valley near Wickede, you first follow the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. You should definitely do that in Fröndenberg Chain Forge Museum visit. There you can admire machines for chain production.
Cultural highlights in the district of Unna
From the Ruhr Valley, the tour continues to the Opherdicke moated castle and again via the Haarstrang back in the direction of Unna. In the picturesque old town you will find numerous restaurants and cozy cafés where you can relax after your tour of the trade routes. That too Center for international light art is suitable as a grand finale. It is the only museum in the world that only exhibits light art.
