Discovery tours in the Ruhr area - canal bank paths north of Dortmund

Cycling by the water - for many, this is the epitome of a cycling holiday. This circuit takes you to the canals north of Dortmund. The starting point is Gneisenau Park directly in front of the colliery of the same name. There is parking on the street and the Dortmund-Derne train station is right next door. With the extraordinarily beautiful colliery scaffolding of the Gneisenau colliery, there is the first photo motif right at the start of the tour.

Seafaring romance while cycling along the canal

The measured values can be transferred to a PC via the Gneisenaustrasse go north first. Away from road traffic, this railway line cycle path leads to the Prussian port in Lunen. At the Datteln-Hamm Canal the cycle path then heads west. The passing coal ships exude a touch of seafaring romance and wanderlust. The canal bank path does not always have the best flooring, but you can generally make your way along in a relaxed manner. Of course, other cyclists and pedestrians are also out and about here, but there is not nearly as much going on as at the popular Ruhr reservoirs in the south.

Important: In front of the Budde-Rosanowski campsite, don't miss the bypass on the left, otherwise a small bridge with steep steps awaits you. The bypass will quickly lead you back to the canal and a little later you will reach the canal junction with the Dortmund-Ems Canal.

Cycle through an old lock chamber

The tour takes you a short distance past the Dortmund-Ems Canal, although you won’t notice as much of the canal due to the vegetation. This is followed by a through town through Datteln, which is not particularly attractive, but you can make a stop at the supermarket or fortify yourself at the snack bars. After crossing the beginning here Rhine-Herne Canal it follows Ship lift Henrichenburg with the passage through the old lock chamber. At the canal, the route now leads back towards Dortmund. The path quality varies and is often not particularly good. But here, too, beautiful perspectives of the canal with magnificent avenues make up for it.

Through the nature reserve back to the starting point

Shortly before the port of Dortmund, the route branches off to the east. It goes for you through the beautiful nature reserves Grävingholz and Süggel. Here you can once again breathe in the wonderful forest air before heading across the fields to the old ventilation shaft of the Minister Stein colliery. A not-so-nice road follows before you finally get back to the premises of the Gneisenau colliery.

Note on the discovery tours in the radrevier.ruhr

This tour is one of the discovery tours im radrevier.ruhr. This means that it also leads along cycle paths that are not part of the region's figureheads. However, accepting compromises in the quality of the cycle path also means being able to “experience” “undiscovered” tours off the popular and often heavily frequented cycle paths. Is a good path condition important to you? Then you should rather come to our 15 RevierRoutes drop by!
