Dattelner Runde - discovery tour between Lippe, Haard and Kanal
The Datteln Loop, as the name suggests, takes you on a 42-kilometer cycling tour around Datteln. Along the way, you'll cycle past the sights and natural beauty of a diverse cultural landscape between the Lippe River, the Haard forest, and the canal. The route is a relaxed ride along farm tracks through fields and green woods, and along canal paths leading to the world's largest canal junction. In the wooded sections of the Datteln Loop, some sections are on unpaved forest tracks, and the elevation changes in the Haard forest require a good level of fitness.
Nature and altitude in the Haard
The tour starts at the Katenkreuz hiking car park. From there you orientate yourself to the right and dive into the beautiful Haard. Now you have to master a few meters of altitude on unpaved forest paths. You have completed the "mountain stage", you drive on dirt roads, cross the settlement in the corner and finally arrive in the village of Horneburg. Here you can pay a visit to the old Horneburg Castle and its small chapel. The old half-timbered houses on the main street are also worth a short break.
Canalside Biking
The route continues through the rural areas around Meckinghoven to the Henrichenburg Lock Park. A small highlight awaits you there: you'll cycle directly through the old trough of the historic lock. A visit to the LWL Industrial Museum Henrichenburg Ship Lift is highly recommended . Continue along level paths through meadows and fields to the Dortmund-Ems Canal . From there, follow the canal bank paths, keeping to the right. Along the Datteln-Hamm Canal, you'll reach the Waltrop district of Holthausen and cross the canal. Continue through the sewage fields until you rejoin the Dortmund-Ems Canal, which you'll pass under via a tunnel. At the "Alte Fahrt" hiking park, turn left onto the ramp. Once you've made it up the short climb, a fantastic view of the largest canal junction in Europe, the Datteln Sea, awaits you. Now follow the canal bank paths of the third canal on this tour, the Wesel-Datteln Canal.

If you continue along the canal paths, you'll leave the towpaths a few kilometers later to explore the Lippe floodplains. Here, several highlights await you, such as the storks, the oxen, and the Vogelsang House. Since you are in a nature reserve, please adhere to the rules and stay on the marked paths. The tour continues to the charming district of Ahsen and then crosses the Wesel-Datteln Canal . On the final section of the route, you'll descend back into the Haard forest, just as you did at the beginning of the tour. You'll cycle along farm tracks through a verdant wooded area until you finally turn left towards the Jammertal valley. Passing the golf course, you'll reach the entrance to the Jammertal Resort. Then, keep right and cycle a short distance along Redder Straße. You've now arrived back at the starting point of the tour, the Katenkreuz hiking parking lot.
