Discovery tour on old and new traffic axes in the western cycling area.ruhr

This 54-kilometer discovery tour in the western Ruhr area presents several important traffic axes between Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen - very bicycle-friendly, largely away from car traffic. Especially the waterway Rhine-Herne Canal is the focus of the bike tour.

On the RS 1 from Mülheim adR to Essen

The starting point of the bike tour is the main train station in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The station is well connected to the Deutsche Bahn network. Those who prefer to travel by car can easily park in the large car parks on the Ruhr (fee-based, but quite cheap). From the main station, the tour first takes you completely via the signposted route node network after eating. With the Cycle expressway Ruhr (RS 1) cyclists experience the future of mobility directly on the former railway line Rhenish Railway.

Explore industrial culture

From Essen's university district, the tour then takes you on through a little city traffic to the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in food. From here Bahntrassenradeln is announced again, because the tour leads over the North Star Walk Rhine-Herne Canal. A short detour to North Star Park with the Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen or up the Schurenbachhalde suggests itself.

The Rhine-Herne Canal

From now on it goes mostly along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the west. The tour no longer runs via the junction network, but is signposted via the red and white cycle network. Large ships, comfortable leisure boats and some sporty rowing boats or kayaks now characterize this important traffic axis in the Ruhr area, which of course was once of central importance for the Ruhr industry. A particularly large number of boats meet for the annual ship parade on the KulturKanal – a perfect date for a bike tour on the Rhine-Herne Canal. Cyclists only have to walk a short distance away from the canal past BernePark, otherwise the Rhine-Herne Canal can be wonderfully experienced. You will also cycle past the Gasometer Oberhausen and the Centro Oberhausen.

Final sprint back to Mülheim

Shortly before the largest inland port in Europe, the bike tour then branches off to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. This leads back to Mülheim an der Ruhr via the junction network past the Aquarius Water Museum.

Note on the discovery tours in the radrevier.ruhr

This tour is one of the discovery tours im radrevier.ruhr. This means that it also leads along cycle paths that are not part of the region's figureheads. However, accepting compromises in the quality of the cycle path also means being able to “experience” “undiscovered” tours off the popular and often heavily frequented cycle paths. Is a good path condition important to you? Then you should rather come to our 15 RevierRoutes drop by!
