Railway routes in the Ruhr area - the Zollvereinweg

The Zollvereinweg in Essen is a popular railway connection between the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein and the Kray-Wanner Railway, which takes you east to Gelsenkirchen and Bochum. The actual route is quite short at only 3,6 kilometers due to the connection to the Kray-Wanner-Bahn in the east and the North Star Walk in the north, however, it fits wonderfully into a network of railway cycle paths.

The heavily loaded trains used to drive down the former freight line from the Zollverein colliery site. The former barrier system directly in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Site was nicknamed "Glück-Auf-Barrier", because you were very lucky when the barrier was actually open.
