Railway routes in the Ruhr area - the Rhenish donkey
The railway line with the special name Rheinischer Esel takes you by bike for 12 kilometers in a wide loop through the south of Dortmund and Witten. At the end of the 70s, passenger traffic on the railway line was shut down and the route also lost importance as a freight connection. As a cycle path, the Rheinische Esel takes over an important connection option from the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path in the south into the central Ruhr area.
The perfect railway line for touring cyclists
While the western part of the Rheinisches Esel is well developed and paved, cyclists east of Witten ride on water-bound surface. Large and important sights are not directly on the route. Nevertheless, the Rheinische Esel is nice to ride for touring cyclists. The Bahntrassenradweg is the perfect cycle path connection from the Ruhr Valley to the Zollern colliery.
