Railway routes in the Ruhr area - The Rhenish Railway

The Rheinische Bahn runs between Essen and Duisburg as one of the most well-known railway lines right through the western Ruhr area. As the central traffic artery parallel to the A 40, the Rheinische Bahn is also the cornerstone for the Cycle expressway Ruhr (RS 1) in the western Ruhr area.

Start at the university district in the center of Essen

From the University of Essen, the Rheinische Bahn will first take you past the new thyssenkrupp district to Krupp Park. At the Niederfeldsee, the water route branches off towards the north. An old railway signal shows the roots of the cycle path as a formerly important freight railway line. In Frohnhausen a branch leads to the Grugaweg, which will take you back to Essen.

RS 1 – The Ruhr cycle expressway

Further west, the Rheinische Bahn becomes the flagship cycle path in the region. The part of the planned Cycle expressway Ruhr between Hamm and Duisburg is completed here and leads you quickly and without crossings to the center of Mülheim an der Ruhr. In the future, the Rheinische Bahn is to run as a Radschnellweg Ruhr to the Rheinpark in Duisburg and thus connect another major city to the Radschnellweg.
