Railway routes in the Ruhr area - the Kray-Wanner-Bahn

The approximately 6-kilometer-long route of the former Kray-Wanner-Bahn is one of the central west-east connections for cyclists in the Ruhr area. The railway line was opened as an important connection for freight trains as early as 1874. With the closure of the Zollverein coking plant, the railway line was no longer needed from 1993 and it was converted into a cycle path. Today you cycle on the Kray-Wanner-Bahn away from the traffic on the best asphalt.

Worthwhile detour

The UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein is an extension of the Kray-Wanner-Bahn with the so-called Customs union route easily accessible by bike. Also the Rheinelbe dump with the Himmelstreppe is an important landmark and sight for cyclists, whose ascent is definitely worthwhile. At the north-east end lies with the ore train booth one of the most popular meeting places for cyclists in the Ruhr area right at the crossing point between the Kray-Wanner-Bahn and ore railway route.

Cycle the Kray-Wanner-Bahn

The Kray-Wanner-Bahn is part of the RevierRouten "tasting piece" and "Railway history(s)“. As the central axis between Essen and Bochum, many other tour tips also lead along this railway line cycle path.
