Railway routes in the Ruhr area - The Grugaweg

The Grugaweg in Essen starts at junction 1 on the Rhenish Railway and runs for almost 9 kilometers via Essen-Rüttenscheid to junction 51 on the Ruhr. The former railway line is an excellent bike connection between the Cycle expressway Ruhr (RS 1) and the popular Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. Except for a crossroads right at the beginning, you cycle completely away from traffic.

Uphill to Essen, downhill to the Ruhr Valley

The first half of the Grugaweg runs slightly uphill over a water-bound surface to Essen, the second half then leads downhill over good asphalt into the Ruhr Valley. Worthwhile stops along the route are above all the Gruga Park, the Garden City Margarethenhöhe and Scene quarter Rüttenscheid with its distinctive gastronomic landscape.

The Grugaweg is an important part of the RevierRoute "garden city”, which shows you the green sides of Mülheim and Essen over around 49 kilometers by bike.
