Railway routes in the Ruhr area - the Gneisenaustrasse

The Bahnstrassenradweg Gneisenaustrasse runs for 5,8 kilometers from Datteln-Hamm Canal near Lünen to the site of the colliery Gneisenau in Dortmund. Along the Weges there are always relics from that time of mining, like a large pulley or a historic mine locomotive. The northern section from Prussian port in Luenen is well developed with asphalt. The southern section between the A2 and the colliery Gneisenau on the other hand, is somewhat less fixed.

History of the railway line

The railway line was opened in 1930 as a freight train connection, so that the coal from the Gneisenau colliery could be delivered directly to the Prussian port. There have been smaller sections since the 80s. With the closure of the collieries and coking plants along the route, the freight train connection became less important. In December 19 it was shut down and finally converted into a railway cycle path.

The Gneisenaustrasse for cyclists

The Bahntrassenradweg belongs to the touristic node network in the radrevier.ruhr and runs via junctions 20, 21, 55 and 56 to the Gneisenau colliery. The route also passes the Victoria III / IV dump. For cyclists, however, the beautiful colliery structure of the Geneisenau colliery is particularly worth a trip.
