Railway routes in the Ruhr area – the Erzbahn route

As one of the most well-known railway routes in the Ruhr area, the Erzbahntrasse takes you around ten kilometers from Bochum to Gelsenkirchen. In the West Park at the Centennial Hall Bochum starts the tour with the striking, 130 meter long Erzbahnschwinge. From there you cycle on the well-developed route, always slightly downhill, to the spectacular Grimberger Sichel, which with a span of 150 meters forms the bridge over the Rhine-Herne Canal power.

Cult meeting place Erzbahnbude 

Away from the traffic, you cycle relaxed to the bike junction at the ore train booth, one of the most popular meeting places for cyclists in the central Ruhr area. At this busy bicycle crossing, a detour branches off to the west in the direction of Essen, via the cyclists, for example, to the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein can drive. The Hanover colliery is again a worthwhile detour in an easterly direction. 

Target: Grimberg Sickle 

Further north, the tour takes you first over the long Erzbahnbrücke and then further downhill to the ZOOM world of experience am Rhine-Herne Canal. The ride over the Grimberger Sichel marks the end of the Erzbahn route. In 2010 it even received the European Steel Bridges Award in the “Footbridges” category. From here you can, for example, continue to Zeche Ewald in Herten with the largest tailings pile landscape in the Ruhr area Hoheward dump. Or you can cycle along the canal in a westerly direction North Star Park Gelsenkirchen or heading east to Ship lift Henrichenburg in Waltrop.
