Railway routes in the Ruhr area - the avenue cycle path (former Westphalian railway)

The Bahntrassenradweg of the former Westphalian Railway runs over 17,6 kilometers in the east of the radrevier.ruhr from Unna-Königsborn to just before Welver in the neighboring district of Soest. The old railway line is rarely interrupted, meaning that long stretches of road are dead straight to the east for cyclists. The entire Allenradweg is also part of the signposted tourist route node system with junction numbers 30, 29 and 53.

History of the old railway line

The route of the Allen Cycle Path originally belonged to the Westphalian Emscher Valley Railway, which opened in 1876 and was an important east-west connection beyond Dortmund to Oberhausen-Sterkrade. While trains are still running in the western part, the eastern part was closed for train traffic in 1968 and eventually developed into a cycle and hiking trail.

The avenue cycle path is part of the RevierRoute "Elephant Round", which, starting from Hamm, makes a long tour through the Westphalian Boerden landscape. There is also a railway line cycle path with a name in the district of Wesel avenue cycle path, with which the railway line in the eastern Ruhr area should not be confused.
