Railway lines in the Ruhr area - the avenue of change
The "Avenue of Change" takes you on a roughly 10-kilometer cycling route from the Hoheward spoil tip in Herten in a wide arc to the beautiful Westerholt district. The former railway line connects several interesting sights along the way, making it particularly attractive for recreational cyclists.

The avenue of change starts at the Hoheward heap, which is considered the largest heap landscape in Europe and offers you extraordinary photo opportunities and panoramic views with the horizon observatory and the sundial. The strenuous ascent to the heap is definitely worth it.
Forest & half-timbered
The Avenue of Change continues through a beautiful wooded area to the former Schlägel & Eisen coal mine . At the end lies the historic village center of Westerholt with its numerous half-timbered houses. Those wishing to extend the Avenue of Change into a circular tour will find pleasant cycle paths towards Gelsenkirchen-Buer and can, for example, return to the starting point via the Hugo Railway and along the Rhine-Herne Canal .
