Riverside paths in the Ruhr area – The Seseke-Weg
At 25 kilometers long, the Seseke-Weg certainly cannot be described as a full-fledged “river cycle path”. The route along the banks of the beautiful stream is worth a (cycling) trip for cyclists in many ways. The Seseke Trail is a lot of fun, especially as part of a day tour.
The story of the Seseke
The Seseke is a tributary of the Lippe and, like the Emscher , was for a long time a polluted sewer. Since initial renaturation work took place as early as 1984, the renaturation of the Seseke can be seen as a preliminary study for the major transformation of the Emscher – one of the world's largest renaturation projects. Today, the Seseke is a significantly more natural-flowing river, which in some places is already beginning to meander.
“Walking on water” – art on the bike path
As part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, the riverside path along the Seseke was artistically decorated and thus sustainably enhanced. Various artists have put up their works along the way, so that the Seseke-Weg is also interesting for cyclists interested in culture. At the same time, many of these works of art are also very popular as photo motifs. The most famous works include the installations “Now” and “Pixelrohr”.
Suitable day tours on the Seseke-Weg
Our " Two Rivers Region " route follows the Seseke Trail and is fully signposted using the junction system . Beginners looking for a shorter tour will find a small circular route with the " Beginner's Cycle Tour around Kamen ".
