Riverside paths in the Ruhr area – The Berne Route
The Berne is one of the better-known tributaries of the Emscher, which is why it is also part of the Emschergenossenschaft's large renaturation project. The Berne route runs for around 9 kilometers from the northern city center of Essen northwards until the Berne flows into the Emscher in Bottrop.
Urban cycling in the countryside
Although it goes through the urban north of Essen, the Berne route often runs away from road traffic in the countryside. The former “Köttel Becken” still has more of the character of a canal. Interesting spots along the way include the Rot-Weiß-Essen football stadium and the Berne Park with its popular tube hotel “theparkhotelat the end of the route.
