Shore paths in the Ruhr area - bike path on the Wesel-Datteln Canal
The Wesel-Datteln Canal is a federal waterway that runs from the Rhine near Wesel to the canal junction in Datteln. It is one of the busiest waterways in Germany. The Wesel-Datteln Canal can also be explored by bike over a distance of around 63 kilometers.
Cycle along the Canal and the Lippe
The canal cycle path starts in the ports south of Wesel and the renatured Lippe estuary delta. The tour takes you east along the canal. After Hünxe and Gahlen, Dorsten is the next larger town. North of the Marl Chemical Park you cycle along the Lippe before the route meets the Wesel-Datteln Canal again just before Haltern am See.
Versatile opportunities for canal bank cycling
The small village of Flaesheim lies to the south, overlooking the vast Haard forest , which is part of the Hohemark Nature Park. On the northern bank of the canal, the route leads you to Datteln. At the lock, right by the Datteln Reservoir, the canal cycle path meets the southern bank. While the Dortmund-Ems Canal branches off to the north, the Rhine-Herne Canal continues to the south . The Wesel-Datteln Canal is part of the RevierRoute “ Kanalpassage ” (Canal Passage) and is also described in the tour tip “ Canal Grande ” on our blog.
