Shore paths in the Ruhr area - cycle path on the Rhine-Herne Canal
The Rhine-Herne Canal is a key waterway of vital importance as a transport route for goods shipped from the Rhine into the central Ruhr region and even further east. It begins in Duisburg at the world's most important inland port and ends at the canal junction in Datteln, where it meets the Dortmund-Ems Canal.
Cycle almost 50 kilometers along the canal
Large parts of the Rhine-Herne Canal are accompanied by a cycle path, which is not explicitly signposted and therefore does not have a clear route. If you want to cycle the entire canal in one go, you can embark on a bike tour of just over 50 kilometers. The nature of the path is very different. In some sections you have to reckon with bad ground, especially after heavy rainfall, as the path mostly runs on a water-bound surface.
From Duisburg via Oberhausen to Bottrop
The canal path leads you from the lock at Duisburg harbor first to Oberhausen. Tourist attractions such as the Gasometer , the Centro shopping center , the Ludwiggalerie art museum, and the striking Slinky Springs to Fame bridge are located directly on the canal. Passing Haus Ripshorst, the path then continues to Bottrop, where you'll take a detour through Berne Park.
Past the stockpile, zoo and ship lift
In Essen's north, the route rejoins the canal and leads past the Schurenbach spoil heap through the Nordsternpark to Gelsenkirchen. From the ZOOM Erlebniswelt (ZOOM Adventure World) onwards, the cycle path repeatedly crosses the canal. Along the way, you'll cycle over the impressive Grimberger Sichel (Grimberg Sickle). At the Herner Meer (Herne Lake), the canal suddenly widens unexpectedly, becoming like a small lake. In Henrichenburg, the route leaves the canal again before continuing along the eastern bank for the final kilometers to the Henrichenburg ship lift . Sections of the Rhine-Herne Canal are also part of the RevierRouten (Regional Routes) " Stahlküche" (Steel Kitchen ), " Grubenfahrt " (Mine Tour), and " Probierstück " (Taster).
