Shore paths in the Ruhr area - bike path on the Datteln-Hamm Canal
The Datteln-Hamm Canal is a federal waterway from the canal junction in Datteln to the Westfalen power plant in Hamm. The main focus is on the transport of goods, but the canal has now also become popular for leisure shipping. You can cycle almost the entire canal by bike, only rarely is the canal bank impassable.
50 kilometers of cycling adventure from Datteln to Hamm
The cycle path along the Datteln-Hamm Canal stretches for approximately 50 kilometers. From the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Datteln, the route heads east, passing north of Waltrop. In Lünen, the Preußenhafen ( Prussian Harbor) and, on hot summer days, Lake Horstmar offer opportunities for a first break. Passing the Großes Holz spoil heap, the elegant Marina Rünthe is the next stop for cyclists.
Worthwhile destinations after the bike tour
Between the Lippe River and the Datteln-Hamm Canal, the cycle tour to Hamm follows the Lippe dike. In Hamm, the spa gardens and the Maximare adventure thermal baths are located directly along the route. Maximilian Park Hamm is also just a short detour away. Finally, the cycle tour ends at the Datteln-Hamm Canal at the turning basin with a view of the Westfalen power plant. The Datteln-Hamm Canal is part of the RevierRouten “ Kanalpassage ”, “ Zweistromland ”, and “ Elefantenrunde ”.
