Railway routes in the Ruhr area – the Erzbahn route
As one of the most famous railway lines in the Ruhr region, the Erzbahntrasse (Ore Railway Trail) takes you on a roughly ten-kilometer journey from Bochum to Gelsenkirchen. The tour begins in Westpark at the Jahrhunderthalle (Centennial Hall ) in Bochum with the striking, 130-meter-long Erzbahnschwinge (Ore Railway Swing). From there, you cycle along the well-maintained trail, gently downhill, to the spectacular Grimberger Sichel (Grimberg Sickle), a bridge spanning 150 meters over the Rhine-Herne Canal.
Cult meeting place Erzbahnbude
Away from traffic, you can cycle at a relaxed pace to the Erzbahnbude cycle junction , one of the most popular meeting points for cyclists in the central Ruhr area. At this busy cycle intersection, a path branches off to the west towards Essen, allowing cyclists to reach destinations such as the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site . The Zeche Hannover coal mine, on the other hand, is a worthwhile detour to the east.

Continuing north, the tour first takes you across the long Erzbahn bridge and then downhill to the ZOOM Erlebniswelt (ZOOM Adventure World) on the Rhine-Herne Canal . The ride over the Grimberger Sichel (Grimberg Sickle) marks the end of the Erzbahntrasse (Erzbahn Trail). It was even awarded the European Steel Bridges Award in the "Pedestrian Bridges" category in 2010. From here, you can, for example, continue to the Ewald Colliery in Herten with the largest spoil heap landscape in the Ruhr area, the Hoheward spoil heap . Or you can cycle along the canal westward to the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen or eastward to the Henrichenburg ship lift in Waltrop.
