Discovery tour on old and new traffic axes in the western cycling area.ruhr
This 54-kilometer discovery tour in the western Ruhr region showcases – in a completely bicycle-friendly manner, largely away from car traffic – several important transport routes between Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen. The Rhine-Herne Canal waterway is the main focus of the tour.
On the RS 1 from Mülheim adR to Essen
The starting point for the bike tour is the main train station in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The station is very well connected to the German Rail network. Those who prefer to travel by car can park easily in the large parking lots along the Ruhr River (parking is subject to a fee, but quite affordable). From the main station, the tour initially follows the signposted network of cycle routes to Essen. With the Ruhr Cycle Expressway (RS 1), cyclists can experience the future of mobility firsthand on the former railway line of the Rhenish Railway.
Explore industrial culture
From Essen's university district, the tour continues through a bit of city traffic to the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen. From here, it's back to cycling along railway lines, as the tour leads along the Nordsternweg to the Rhine-Herne Canal . A short detour to the Nordsternpark with the Nordstern coal mine in Gelsenkirchen or up to the Schurenbach spoil heap is also recommended.
The Rhine-Herne Canal
From now on it goes mostly along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the west. The tour no longer runs via the junction network, but is signposted via the red and white cycle network. Large ships, comfortable leisure boats and some sporty rowing boats or kayaks now characterize this important traffic axis in the Ruhr area, which of course was once of central importance for the Ruhr industry. A particularly large number of boats meet for the annual ship parade on the KulturKanal – a perfect date for a bike tour on the Rhine-Herne Canal. Cyclists only have to walk a short distance away from the canal past BernePark, otherwise the Rhine-Herne Canal can be wonderfully experienced. You will also cycle past the Gasometer Oberhausen and the Centro Oberhausen.
Final sprint back to Mülheim
Shortly before reaching Europe's largest inland port, the cycle tour branches off onto the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path . This leads back to Mülheim an der Ruhr via the network of cycle junctions, past the Aquarius Water Museum.
Note on the discovery tours in the radrevier.ruhr
This tour is one of the discovery tours in the Ruhr cycling region. This means it also takes you along cycle paths that aren't among the region's most popular routes. Accepting compromises in cycle path quality, however, also means being able to experience "undiscovered" tours away from the popular and often heavily frequented cycle paths.
