The mining route RevierRoute - experience mining

For many, mining still symbolizes the Ruhr area. However, this era finally came to an end in 2018, when Prosper Haniel, the last hard coal mine in the region, was closed. You can follow the growing myth of mining on a bike for around 40 kilometers.

Mining history by bike

The "Mine Tour" begins and ends at the absolute highlight of the tour: the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen. The heritage trail, for which interesting guided tours are offered, illustrates the journey of coal. The Ruhr Museum, also located on the industrial site, should not be missed on your little exploration. The well-maintained Nordsternweg railway line then leads you onward to Gelsenkirchen. The Schurenbach spoil heap in Essen and the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen are recommended side trips off the main tour route.

The tour continues to the Tetraeder in Bottrop . The climb is strenuous, but once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a unique view over the western Ruhr region. The Prosper Haniel coal mine site is also clearly visible from the slag heap. In Oberhausen, the RevierRoute then heads south again, leading you back to Essen via the Rheinische Bahn railway line .
