The RevierRoute Haldenglück - experience views

There are no mountains in the Ruhr region? That's not entirely true! During the Ruhr region's industrial heyday, large hills were created from the dumping of overburden, slag, and construction debris, permanently changing the landscape. Today, many of the slag heaps have been renaturalized and made accessible. You can even climb them by bike.

More information

Climb heaps or admire them from below

The RevierRoute "Haldenglück" is a route that takes you around 38 kilometers past the heaps and is therefore easy to master at almost 190 meters in altitude. On the other hand, if you want to have the full heap experience, you should also climb one or the other heap. If you climb all the heaps of the route, the elevation gain of the tour increases to 340 and the total length of the route is also eight kilometers longer.

From heap theory to practice

The starting point of the bike tour is Essen Central Station. From there, you'll cycle first to the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site and then along Zollvereinweg to the Kray-Wanne Railway . The Rheinelbe spoil tip awaits you as the first "hill." Passing the Erzbahnbude , one of the most popular meeting points for cyclists in the Ruhr area, you'll continue north along the Erzbahntrasse ( ore railway line). Shortly before the Rhine-Herne Canal, you can spot the Pluto spoil tip on your right . The Hoppenbruch spoil tip is particularly well-suited for mountain biking . There's an official enduro course for mountain bikers here! On the Hoheward spoil tip, you'll find a more moderate cross-country trail. You can also climb both spoil tips without a mountain bike. The "Haldenglück" (Spoil Tip Bliss) RevierRoute concludes with a relaxed ride to Recklinghausen.
