MTB in the Ruhr area - Haard on Tour

The largest contiguous forest area in the Ruhr area is also an exciting cycling area for mountain bikers. The 5.500-hectare forest area is easily accessible via the 41-kilometer Haard on Tour mountain bike trail. The route is completely signposted and therefore also easy to follow. As an easy mountain bike route, the tour is particularly aimed at nature lovers, beginners in mountain biking and families.

41 km signposted mountain bike circuit

The Trail Haard on Tour is designed as a large circuit. Thanks to the cloverleaf-like structure, the route can also be shortened easily, because the shortcuts are also signposted as intermediate routes, as are the access roads from the hiking car parks. So even a short after-work ride is easily possible. The path is completely signposted in an anti-clockwise direction. In the outdoor area, however, signposts can quickly get lost, so it is advisable to have a good map or a digital navigation system with you.

 Nature experience on the MTB

In the foreground of the mountain bike trail is the experience of nature. Most of the time it is on broader forest paths, which have been more or less reclaimed by nature and have therefore been given the character of a trail. It goes over paths that can also be used by hikers. Even with oncoming traffic must be different than when Trail on Hoheward be counted. Appropriate consideration for other visitors the haird is therefore particularly important.

Altitude meters require calf strength

The tour is characterized by constant ups and downs, so that in the end there are a few meters in altitude. The wavy height profile leads to very different indications of the altitude difference. While Komoot specifies the tour at around 500 meters in altitude, some barometric systems also like to reach around 800 meters in altitude. In any case, bikers will feel the difference in altitude in their legs at the end of the day, because the constant changes are more strenuous in the long run than a constant climb in the high mountains.

Getting to the Haard on Tour

An ideal starting point for those arriving by car is the forest and hiking car park on the Dachsberg in Flaesheim in the very north of the route. From here there is also a perfect arc of suspense with a very easy start and a fun end to the tour. In between, the trail slowly becomes more demanding, although it remains easy to ride even for beginners. In addition, there are five more hiking car parks available as entry points into the Haard on Tour. You can board the Haard on Tour by train in the south in Marl-Sinsen or in the north in Haltern am See.

The sandy subsoil is typical of Haard on Tour

The tour is ideal for families and beginners in mountain biking. The more difficult passages can easily be bypassed or pushed. But even advanced bikers will have fun on the trail. With the sandy soil, the trails are quite demanding in some places. There are also some surprisingly steep climbs and steep descents for those unfamiliar with the area. Finally, a few well-developed berms and ramps will put a big grin on every biker's face.
