Gravel in the Ruhr area - cross-border tour with the gravel bike

This approximately 50-kilometer circuit takes you right through the Hohe Mark Nature Park, with the Üfter Mark and Dümerwald forest areas, through the idyllic village center of Erle and past Raesfeld Castle. The route runs mostly away from traffic on unpaved forest and gravel paths. This tour is therefore particularly recommended for gravel bikers. The town hall in Schermbeck is a good starting point for the tour.

Pure nature in the Üfter Mark

Shortly after the center of Schermbeck you are already in the forest area of the Üfter Mark. In some places it can be a bit sandy, especially if it has been dry for a long time. It is therefore advisable to ride the tour with slightly thicker tires or to dismount for a short time. In between you have to cross Borkener Straße and two game gates. Where the horses used to be changed at the Suendarp post station, there is now a covered seating area that is perfect for a break.

Oak with all senses

The section to Erle leads you along quiet country lanes. Erle is known for its fen oak, which is considered to be the oldest and best-known court tree in Central Europe. A short stopover at the Kornbrennerei Böckenhoff is not only worthwhile for fans of "high-proof spirits". Directly behind the cozy shop you have a great view of the parish church of St. Silvester from the distillery courtyard.

Renaissance flair in Raesfeld

Raesfeld Castle with its more than 52 meter high castle tower can be seen from afar. In addition to the imposing castle, there are small shops with a personal atmosphere in the center of Raesfeld, as well as larger restaurants and hotels. Immediately behind the castle, the tour takes you through the Tiergarten, with extensive meadows and small, enchanting lakes. Since the park is fenced, you have to pass through a gate at the beginning and end.

In the twilight back to Schermbeck

Light groves and open clearings alternate with shady spots in the "twilight forest". Here, too, the path mostly runs on forest and gravel paths. Be considerate of hikers on this tour in particular, as they also use some of the forest paths. As soon as you drive out of the forest, it goes back to the starting point in Schermbeck.
