Gravel in the Ruhr area - Gravel tour through the district of Recklinghausen

This approximately 50-kilometer circuit takes you past the Creative Quarter Prince Leopold, up to Fire lookout tower Galgenberg, with a breathtaking view over the Hohe Mark nature park, as well as the baroque Lembeck moated castle. The route runs mostly away from traffic, but on unpaved forest and gravel paths, so that this tour is particularly suitable for cyclists with the gravel bike is recommended. The Dorsten-Hervest train station is a good starting point for the tour.

Industrial culture and stork country

Not far from the start you are already cycling through the CreativQuartier Fürst Leopold, easily recognizable by the old colliery tower. On the site of the disused colliery, there are various gastronomic facilities in addition to a lot of art and culture. Passing the former heap of the colliery, which today has been transformed into a walk-in landscape structure, we continue to the Hervest break. Here in "Storkland" you can watch the brooding storks from the two viewing platforms along the way.

Railway track cycling on the Hamburg-Venloer railway

The route takes you over quiet dirt roads to the disused railway line Haltern am See-Wesel, a section of the former cross-border line Route Hamburg-Venlo (NL). Since the railway line has not been completely rebuilt so far, you branch off briefly to get back on the route at the old train station in Lippramsdorf. Leave the path behind the former manor Burg and Haus Ossendorf and turn left towards the north.

High up in the Hohe Mark Nature Park

Now follows what is probably the most strenuous part of this route. The tour takes you up to the Galgenberg first over field paths and then over forest paths. The Galgenberg fire watchtower is located in the middle of the Hohe Mark. It stands on a 122 meter high elevation. Climbing the tower, which is almost 40 meters high, is recommended. From up there you have a great view of the nature park. After the descent, we continue to the Lembeck moated castle. Since the cycle path along Lippramsdorfer Straße does not run continuously on both sides, you unfortunately have to cross the side of the road several times. It is worth planning a detour to the castle here.

Through forest landscapes back to the starting point

Through the forest area "Der Hagen" and the nature reserve "Bachsystem des Wienbaches" you return to Dorsten. Here, too, the path mostly runs on forest and gravel paths. Be considerate of hikers on this tour in particular, as they also use some of the forest paths. Arrived in Dorsten-Hervest it goes around the blue lake back to the starting point.

Note on gravel tours in the radrevier.ruhr

This tour is a gravel tour in the radrevier.ruhr. This means that as a rather sporty route, it also leads away from the signposted cycle paths for touring cyclists. Cyclists can usually expect a colorful mixture of asphalt, gravel, near-natural forest and forest paths and now and then tricky trails. The tours can not only be ridden with gravel bikes, they can also be very interesting for cyclists on mountain bikes or trekking bikes. Is a good path condition important to you?
