Gravel in the Ruhr area - the Ennepe circuit with a gravel bike

The approximately 45-kilometer circular course of the Ennepe Circuit is well suited for a tour with the gravel bike and for cyclists who are looking for a sporty tour and are willing to accept both road sections and gravel roads. With 460 meters of altitude, it's quite a climb. The district of Haspe in Hagen is a good starting point for the tour. There is a car park at Ennepepark and Haspe train station can also be chosen as a starting point.

About the probably most atypical Bahntrassenradweg in radrevier.ruhr

First, the Ennepe circuit takes you out of Haspe through the urban area. You can quickly see the Haspebach on the left, which the tour more or less follows. The entrance is not so nice and there is a lot on the road. It gets interesting with the beginning of the former Kleinbahn line Haspe-Voerde-Breckerfeld. What is probably the most atypical railway cycle path in the Ruhr area initially stretches in wide arcs over a mixture of gravel and forest paths up to the Hasper dam. After the beautiful viaduct, it gets steeper and the railway line meanders in serpentines up to Voerde.

Break at 418 meters above sea level

After crossing Breckerfelder Straße, it becomes a little flatter again, but the tour continues to follow the former railway line. Unfortunately, the route is not continuously mobile, so that it sometimes goes through towns and cities. In Breckerfeld you can take a good break at the ice cream parlor or in one of the cafés, because the highest point is 418 meters above sea level.

After many meters of altitude, rapid descent into the Ennepetal

From Breckerfeld, the tour takes you along a field path and a road to the Ennepetalsperre. From here it goes downhill rapidly. On a well-paved road, which is mostly only used by a few drivers, you can quickly drive down to Ennepetal and enjoy the beautiful nature. From Ennepetal there is a lot of city traffic again. The tour continues through Gevelsberg in the Ennepe valley back to Haspe.

Note on gravel tours in the radrevier.ruhr

This tour is a gravel tour in the radrevier.ruhr. This means that as a rather sporty route, it also leads away from the signposted cycle paths for touring cyclists. Cyclists can usually expect a colorful mixture of asphalt, gravel, near-natural forest and forest paths and now and then tricky trails. The tours can not only be ridden with gravel bikes, they can also be very interesting for cyclists on mountain bikes or trekking bikes. Is a good path condition important to you?
