Long-distance cycle paths in the Ruhr area
The cycle route network of radrevier.ruhr is primarily based on the three major regional long-distance cycle routes: the Industrial Heritage Route by Bike, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, and the Roman-Lippe Route. The approximately 300-kilometer-long Industrial Heritage Route by Bike runs through the central Ruhr region and is therefore the heart of radrevier.ruhr. The popular Ruhr Valley Cycle Route runs along the southern border of the Ruhr region , while the Roman-Lippe Route offers exciting cycling experiences in the northern part of radrevier.ruhr.
Emscher-Weg, Rhine Cycle Route and RS 1
Besides these three themed long-distance cycle routes in the Ruhr region, the Emscher Cycle Route and the Rhine Cycle Route also play an important role in the regional cycle network. Looking ahead, the Ruhr Cycle Expressway , or RS 1 for short, will also assume a significant function in the regional cycle network. Currently, however, cyclists can only find isolated sections in the region, which offer a first, albeit still limited, glimpse into the future of cycling.

Ruhr Valley Cycle Path
The cycling highlight in North Rhine-Westphalia! The RuhrtalRadweg meanders 240 kilometers from Winterberg in Sauerland into the Ruhr area to the Rhine near Duisburg. No other cycle path in Germany combines such a wide range of relaxing nature, old industrial monuments and modern high culture in such a small space.
Roman Lippe Route
Opened in 2013, the Römer-Lippe-Route between Detmold and Xanten is still one of the newcomers among long-distance tourist cycle paths. With the Roman past of the region and the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia, the 295-kilometer-long main route of the Römer-Lippe-Route stands for historical Roman culture and sparkling water experiences.
Emscher path
The Emscher Trail from Holzwickede to Dinslaken is arguably one of the most unusual river cycle paths in Germany. Here, the structural transformation can be experienced firsthand, as cyclists accompany the Emscher not only on its journey across the Ruhr region, but also on its important path of renaturation, transforming it from a formerly smelly sewer into a small natural paradise of the future.
