The slag heaps in the Ruhr region are a true highlight. They mostly consist of the remnants of mining, meaning energy-inefficient waste rock that was extracted from the earth, separated from the valuable coal, and dumped on top. Over decades, this process created the hills, mountains, and elevations of the Ruhr region, which are not of natural origin. Most of them are now greened, crowned by sometimes spectacular works of art and landmarks, and thus have become truly authentic highlights, not just in terms of elevation. They serve as viewpoints, recreational areas, picnic spots, and, last but not least, fantastic photo opportunities! All the more reason to visit them, especially by bike!
